In 1894, German-born medical doctor Karl Grossmann, then living in Liverpool, England, together with two friends – Otto Cahnheim and Joseph Lomas – visited the Faroe Islands. Grossmann, who like his travel companions had a keen interest in geology, was also a dedicated photographer and took a large number of photographs during the tour. After slide lectures in Copenhagen and London – the former not without subsequent controversy. Grossmann handed over approximately 180 photographs from the Faroe Islands to the Royal Geographical Society in London, where they lay unnoticed. Many of them, along with an explanatory text, are here presented to a wider audience. Grossmann’s images make up the oldest substantial collection of photographs from the archipelago, including the earliest known from the remote islands of Mykines, Svínoy and Fugloy.
