In 1931 the Danish architect and archaeologist Aage Roussell (1901-1972) visited the Western and Northern Isles of Scotland. Roussell had become very interested in the morphology of Norse houses, farmsteads and churches. Three years after his return he published the book Norse Building Customs in the Scottish Isles.

Here, using newly-discovered papers, the author describes Roussell’s return visit to the Northern Isles, on the eve of the Second World War.
