About the authors

Steffen Stummann Hansen is an archaeologist, historian and publisher who has held posts at museums in Northern Zealand, the University of Copenhagen, the Danish Polar Center, and he was formerly the State Antiquary of the Faroe Islands. Since 1982 he has specialized in the Viking Age and Medieval period of the North Atlantic with fieldwork in Shetland, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland and Norway. Lately he has also produced a number of publications on the history of photography in the Faroe Islands.

Kevin J. Edwards is a geographer, palaeoecologist and environmental archaeologist, with interests in the history of science. He is Emeritus Professor in Physical Geography and Adjunct Professor in Archaeology at the University of Aberdeen; at the University of Cambridge, he is a Senior Fellow of the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research, an Emeritus Associate of the Scott Polar Research Institute, and a Fellow Commoner of Clare Hall. His fieldwork experience includes the North Atlantic region from Shetland to Newfoundland.
