In 1839 the Danish Governor in the Faroe Islands, Christian Pløyen, visited Shetland with three Faroese companions. During his stay Pløyen travelled throughout the islands and was given hospitality by a number of eminent Shetlanders. Pløyen never returned to Shetland but he kept in contact with one of the acquaintances he had made, Captain William Cameron Mouat of Gardie House on Bressay, of which letters preserved in the Gardie House Archive bear witness.
