During 1982-1987 large-scale investigations of a Faroese Viking-age farmstead were conducted at Toftanes in Leirvík. The excavations uncovered well-preserved house structures and a huge artefact assemblage which provided a very significant insight into the early history of the Faroe Islands. This semi-popular publication presents the results of the excavations and discusses the site in its wider North Atlantic context.
